Clean up in BoU continues as seven new top jobs are advertised

After a series of scandals in the recent past, Bank of Uganda was fast losing public trust and a recent change in top positions points at cleaning up the image of the institution.

At the beginning of this year, former Deputy Governor Dr Louis Kasekende bowed out of the Central Bank after the appointing authority President Yoweri Museveni not renewing his contract. It was a big blow to Kasekende who hoped to replace Governor Tumusiime Mutebile when his contract expires in January next year. Kasekende was recently replaced by Dr Dr Michael Atingi-Ego.

Kasekende’s exit followed that of Justine Bagyenda, the former Executive Director Commercial Bank Supervision. She was sacked by Mutebile in an attempt to save the image of BoU which had been tarnished by her dealings in the closure and takeover of several commercial banks, with the Crane Bank saga as the tipping point. Both an Auditor General’s report and a Parliament probe pointed to possible collusion and corruption among BoU staff and the beneficiaries of the bank take overs.

Now, seven new top jobs have been advertised. The jobs are Executive Director Information Technology and Executive Director Operations. The others are Director Non-Bank Financial Institutions, Director Medical, Director Human Resources, Director Financial Stability and Director Financial Markets.

The jobs we advertised internally on Friday April 24 in a notice to all staff signed by Solomon Oketcho, the Executive Director Administration.
