Uganda might be on the right path in its fight against COVID-19, but the economic aftermath of the pandemic is anticipated to be a tougher battle.
While appearing on NBS TV this morning, Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Hon Amelia Kyambadde addressed a series of concerns. Kyambaddde said the Private Sector has been greatly hit by the pandemic but government is trying to come up with a solution.
She offered herself to lead the fight saying, “I will continue voicing for the voiceless.”
The Minister revealed that the longest time for Uganda to recover economically from the pandemic is about six months. She said with griculture being one of the sectors that are greatly surviving even in this current situation, Ugandans should overwhelmingly engage in the sector.
“We only have 215 factories out of 4720 in operation due to COVID-19, this has hit us as a Trade sector. We had targeted to have 5500 factories this year,” Kyambadde said.
Kyambadde said in such moments, Ugandans should utilize cross-boarder Trade and African Continental Free Trade Area since overseas trade has highly shot down.
“There has been a decline in the cargo flows but they are still ongoing. Initially, we had over 3,920 trucks, but they have gone down to about 800 because of the measures we have taken,” she said.
