MP Francis Zaake arrested for defying food distribution directive

Mityana Member of Parliament Hon. Francis Zaake.

Police in Mityana have arrested area Member of Parliament Hon. Francis Zaake for going against President Yoweri Museveni’s directives on food distribution during this lockdown.

In a statement issued by Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga, he said Zaake disobeyed lawful orders likely to spread coronavirus.

Zaake was arrested yesterday as he was distributing at least 2 kilograms of rice and sugar to selected households in Buswabulongo and Kiwawu villages in Mityana Municipality.

“The MP was distributing outside the guidelines and new protocols by the National Task Force (NTF), a national fundraising and food distribution task team, that is overseeing all forms of support to vulnerable families facing hunger or struggling to afford food within Uganda, during this period of the pandemic,” Enanga said in a statement.

In several live broadcasts of Museveni’s addresses, he said anyone found distributing food without observing the guidelines will be arrested and charged with attempted murder, or murder.

Enanga said the Joint Task Force appreciates the generosity of all companies, politicians, individuals, and manufacturers that have contributed to feeding vulnerable families during this uncertain period.

“We call upon anyone who would wish to donate food items to observe the guidelines and safety protocols in place to avoid endangering the safety of all beneficiaries,” he said.
