Court sends businessman Abid Alam, four Police officers to prison for torture, gang rape, obstruction of justice

Last week on April 8, 2020, the Anti-Corruption Unit led by Col Edith Nakalema working with the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) arrested businessman Abid Alam of Alam Group of Companies on allegations of aggravated torture, malicious damage of property and gang-rape.

Shortly after that, four Police officers namely; Regional CID Officer Wamala SP Wanyama Wilber Ostin, DPC Kassanda, SP Owellano Daniel, OC CID Kassanda, SP Beitera Peter and In Charge CID Records Wamala Sgt. Azale on were arrested on directions of Inspector Generl Of Police (IGP) Martin Ochola, on allegations of conspiring with Alam to mismanage his case files to help him defeat justice, something that violates their professional conduct.

Today, Alam and the four officers have appeared before Buganda Road Court where they have been charged and remanded to Kitalya Maximum Security Prison in Mityana District until May 8, 2020 when Court will hear their bial aapplication.

Prosecution alleges that on April 8, 2020, the four officers mentioned above unlawfully released confidential information in Police File Case reference No. Kassanda CRB 234/ 2020 to Alam, in an effort to help him defeat justice.

It is alleged that Alam sent attackers to the farm of one Arthur Mugyenyi, the Deputy Director of Internal Security Organization (ISO) in Kassanda district and they cut down three acres of banana plantation, gang-raped a woman in front of her children, tortured workers, and stole 200 cows and 50 goats.

All the accused have pleaded not guilty.
