Coronavirus will at least take us six months to contain – reveals Health Ministry Permanent Secretary Dr Diana Atwine

Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Dr Diana Atwine has revealed that Uganda might be destined for a longer battle of defeating COVID-19 pandemic in Uganda.

Dr Atwine said the Ministry is in a critical condition of fighting the coronavirus pandemic that has infected 33 people in the country already. She however, revealed that the Ministry is determined to contain the spread of the coronavirus thought it might take them some time to completely kick it out of the country.

“Coronavirus will at least take us six months to contain if necessary measures are followed and necessary equipment is acquired,” Dr Atwine said.

Dr Atwine said that when COVID-19 was first confirmed in China in December last year, the Health Ministry developed a Shs25 billion preparedness plan to handle the threat. She disclosed that so far the Ministry only received Shs5 billion and it has all been used up.

Yesterday, three new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Uganda to 33. Out of 206 samples that were ran yesterday Sunday, March 29, 203 samples tested negative for COVID-19.

Last week, President Yoweri Museveni hinted that government might need to issue tougher directives to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
