MP Nsereko says deducting Shs2m from each MP is useless, “Gov’t will instead use that money to buy wielding sticks”

Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko.

Early this week, Nakaseke South Member of Parliament Hon Lutamaguzi Ssemakula offered Shs2 million from his monthly Parliament salary to help in the noble cause of fighting Coronavirus.

“I want Parliament to be deducting Shs2m from my salary until Uganda manages to kick out Coronavirus,” Lutamaguzi said before calling upon other 425 MPs to also allow the same amount to be deducted from their salary as contribution to fund the Coronavirus budget.

During a press conference today at Parliament, Kampala Central Member of Parliament Muhammad Nsereko said the proposal by fellow MP Lutamaguzi will not help as it is too minor of a solution compared to the problems the country has to address in this situation.

“Telling us (MPs) to pay Shs2 million will not help feed millions of families that have no food. This government can even instead use that money to buy wielding sticks to beat Ugandans,” Nsereko said.

Nsereko instead urges President Museveni to come out and direct Bank of Uganda to engage commercial banks and extend loan payment periods. He also said government should engage landlords of both commercial and residential buildings to either pardon their tenants or give them enough time to pay.
