Parliament rejects MP’s motion to carry forward public holidays that fall on the weekend

It is common speak in Uganda to call a public holiday that falls on the weekend a “wasted public holiday.”  Rakai District Woman MP Suubi Kinyamatama had a bright idea and moved a motion to to introduce a private member’s Bill entitled “the Public Holidays (Amendment) Bill, 2020.

The object of the bill is to ensure continued recognition and honour of public holidays that fall on weekends to be observed on working days to avoid interfering with rest days and weekends.

This motion has however been rejected by Parliament. Had been passed into law, we would enjoy the benefits as early that Monday 9th March – this year’s Women’s Day that falls on Sunday 8th March is one of those “wasted public holidays.”
