Some Amudat residents were excited about seeing locusts, they thought it was food – says region CAO

Government might be on tension after a swarm of locusts invaded the districts of Amudat and Nakapiripiti, but some residents seem to be excited about the invasion according to Masokonyi Waiswa, the Amudat District Chief Administrative Officer.

Masokonyi said some of the residents were ignorant about the invasion and so they thought the locusts were food. He said government authorities are in the region sensitizing people about the hazardous invasion. Even before the invasion of locusts, Karamoja region is well known for being prone to hunger and malnutrition.

Government yesterday confirmed that more swarms of locusts are expected to invade the country over the next few days. The authorities continue to vow that government has already assembled enough manpower and resources to counter the invading locusts.

Yesterday, UPDF dispatched 2,000 soldiers to Karamoja to fight the locusts but the Chief of Defence Forces, General David Muhoozi said if the deployed soldiers are not enough, they are ready to dispatch more. He also assured that the army is committed to doing everything possible to contain the locusts.
