Uganda Cranes’ duo Denis Onyango and Emmanuel Okwi have been included in the preliminary lists of nominees for the 2019 African men’s and women’s Player of the Year awards.
In the list released by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Onyango scooped two nominations in the category of African Player of the year where he will be racing with 10 players trading in the English Premier League and newly re-introduced category of African Inter-clubs Player of the Year where fellow countryman Okwi was also nominated.
The list for African Player of the year has 30 names with the most notable being Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, who has won the men’s title for the last two years, his Liverpool team-mate, Sadio Mane of Senegal is also on the list. Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez, who helped Algeria win the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, is also in race for the gong.
The list of nominees is compiled by a panel of media and technical professionals and the awards will take place on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 in Hurghada, Egypt.
