Looks like everyone that gets to the podium to talk about the Makerere unrest has their own reason why students are striking and it is becoming annoyingly impossible to understand the real reason for the ongoing protests.
Earlier this week, First Lady Maama Janet Museveni said that Makerere students are being paid to protest in the disguise of the 15% increment of tuition fees.
Yesterday, Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga asked Minister for Higher Education John Chrysostom Muyingo to present a statement on the unrest at Uganda’s oldest public university and when h stepped on the Parliament floor, he said that the rampant abuse of drugs and other narcotics by students at the institution has worsened the situation at Makerere.
Muyingo appealed to the students to resume lectures as the university council and management are working with all the stakeholders to find an amicable solution to the situation.
On Tuesday, the university management scrapped the 15% increment on functional fees but upheld the 15% cumulative tuition increment which the students say it must be scrapped as well.
