Three more suspects have been arrested in connection with the kidnap of Nagirinya Maria and her driver Ronald Kitayimbwa in Lungujja, Kampala, on August 28 and their subsequent murder on August 30. This brings the total number of suspects in police custody for this double murder to six.
Police has not yet revealed the identity of these suspects but Spokesperson Fred Enanga said in a press conference hours ago that they are being interrogated to help police in investigations and find the motive behind their act.
According to Police, the suspects arrested include the driver of the car who appeared in the CCTV footage that was released last week and a boda boda rider that rode the kidnappers to Nagiririnya’s gate in Lungujja on the fateful night she was abducted.
“We have arrested three prime suspects, including the man who was driving Maria Nagirinya’s car (the one who was in a red jacket). We are now interrogating them further to get more details. A SIM card belonging to Ronald Kitayimbwa who was murdered alongside Maria Nagirinya was also recovered from the suspects,” he said.
The arrest was greatly aided by the prior arrest of a one Fortune Mugisha Ayebare who was in constant communication with the killers. Police also said that they have communicated to her (Ayebare) parents who had started reporting that she had been kidnapped as well.
“The woman (Mugisha) was arrested and is in safe custody. Her parents were also informed accordingly,” Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said.
The three prime suspects were picked up on Sunday night by a joint team of investigators from Police’s Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) and the Internal Security Organisation (ISO).
