DFCU Bank is yet again in a fresh money heist as reports coming in indicate that unknown hackers made away with over Shs10 billion from several branches around Kampala.
Sources say late last month hackers withdrew Shs700 million from customers’ deposits and the bank decided to solve the crisis internally to avoid creating any scene to the public.
However, as the institution authorities were still dealing with crisis, a mega disaster has hit them. This time hackers have stolen $2.6 million (about Shs9 billion) and the bank has reportedly decided to hide it no more as it is alleged that they have already reported the matter to Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (CIID) in Kibuli under CID HDQTRs GEF604/2019.
Although police CID department has concealed the details of the hacking, our sources say arrests of the junior bank staff and two outsiders have been made and they are currently under police custody to make their statements about the incidents.
In the recent past, the same institution has faced several hacking cases. The head of communications at DFCU Rukh-Shana Namuyimba said she wasn’t aware of any hacking when contacted for a comment.
“I am not in position to comment because I am not aware of that,” She said.
Sources at the Bank attribute the hacking to cliques that emerged since the appointment of Mathias Katamba as the Bank’s Managing Director after DFCU board temporarily named William Sekabembe as MD but was later dropped.
