Nagirinya murder: Eight Police officers convicted, two to be demoted

The Police disciplinary tribunal has convicted eight Police officers over professional misconduct and negligence of duty following the kidnap and murder of Maria Nagirinya and her driver Ronald Kitayimbwa in August this year.

Addressing journalists earlier today, Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga revealed that the officers failed to defend themselves before the Police tribunal and they will have to serve their respective punishments.

According to the tribunal, the convicted officers that include; Natete Police Station OC Andrew Nzeyimana and the Natete Patrol Commander Allan Okello, Mohammed Byansi, Sunday Baguma, Joshua Basaliza, Deo Gitute, Simon Owana and Lauben Bitweyo neglected their duty and failed to immediately respond to a report of kidnap of Nagirinya and her driver in Lungujja, Rubaga division.

Six out of the eight officers were sentenced to reprimands by the Police disciplinary court and that in case of any other offence committed by them; they would face a bigger punishment.

Owana and Bitweyo who were at the rank of corporals are to be demoted to Police constables and they were given only 14 days ultimatum to file their appeal to the Police Appeals Court.
