After winning the best women’s rights film award in the London Eye Film Festival back in 2017, Ugandan  actress Eleanor Nabwiso of Nabwiso Films has yet again received an award at the London Art House Film Festival that took place in London. Her movie Bed of thorns won the best Africa Focus Award.

Bed of thorns is the first all-female made crew movie that tackles gender-based violence an issue that is a major concern all over Africa.

The Nabwisos

Bed of Thorns follows the story of Stella who is getting married in a few weeks but friends around her know she is being battered by her fiancé and their aim is to stop the wedding from happening. Everyone is actually undergoing domestic violence from emotional abuse, physical abuse, bullying, and rape.

While appearing on BBC Africa, Eleanor Nabwiso, the movie producer said that she has had friends experiencing gender-based violence which pushed her to produce the movie.

“Don’t keep quiet, come out and speak out. If you don’t speak out you could suffer from depression or a man could kill you,” said Eleanor as she vowed to produce more movies on issues affecting women.

She further said it is about time culture stopped this habit, people have to move on because the habit of men beating men is so wrong.

“My film is called Bed of Thorns. Don’t keep quiet, the message from this film is don’t keep quiet, come out and speak out to either a councillor or police man,” she said.
