“The department that issued the sanctions didn’t have their information right, Kale isn’t in hot soup.” Kayihura’s lawyer speaks out

The US last week imposed travel sanctions on Kale Kayihura and his immediate family members arguing that the former police chief had “overseen gross violations of human rights” when he led the force.

Jet Tumwebaze, a lawyer to Kayihura has said his client was not surprised by the accusation. Tumwebaze believes Kale is not in hot soup as he described the accusations as the usual allegations that will go away.

“Anybody who thinks that this is about human rights in Uganda is daydreaming, the USA has never been interested in Ugandan human rights,” Tumwebaze said revealing that the accusations are beyond Kayihura but rather intended to cripple the current government over time.

He added, “Sometimes we overrate certain countries. The department that issued the sanctions didn’t have their information right. This isn’t about Kayihura, it is a deliberate move, and it is a bit wider than Kale.”

Tumwebaze further stated that for those who thought Kayihura was the cause of human rights violations in Uganda should see what is currently happening.

“The past one and half years Kayihura has been out of office have helped the nation know who has been carrying out torture,” he said.

Following the accusations last week, Gen. Kale Kayihura issued a statement saying the accusations are ridiculous and laughable.
