EC to create new electoral areas as it reveals that National IDs will not be used in the 2021 general elections

During the stakeholders meeting that was held in Kampala yesterday, Electoral Commission Deputy Chairperson Hajjat Aisha Lubega said that the National Identification Card will not be used during the 2021 general elections.

According to Aisha Lubega, the National ID will only be a requirement for one to be included on the voters’ register.

For someone to vote, Aisha said someone must be a Ugandan above 18 years, must have a National Identification Number form and he/she should belong to an electoral area of residence.

Hajjat Aisha Lubega said starting September 13 – 14, the EC will kick off its process of demarcation of electoral areas and re-organisation of polling stations.

“New electoral areas are to be introduced in rural areas,” Aisha Lubega said.

The reason for creating new electoral areas, Aisha revealed, is that it was influenced by the overtime populations growth that has in turn led to new creations in the local government.
