PHOTOS: Mayorkun, Irene Ntale, John Blaq turn up the heat at East Meets West music festival

Kampala is a hub of activity especially during the mid-year with the social calendar overflowing with fun and exciting events.

Yesterday was one of those days that saw Kampala party folks flock the Lugogo Hockey Grounds to watch Nigerian star Mayorkun at the Afro-fusion festival dubbed ‘East Meets West’.

Sponsored by Johnnie Walker, the event was a delightful mixed bag of Nigerian and East African musicians going head to head in an epic showdown that got revelers on their feet. The Nigerian star left no doubt that he was one of the fast-rising stars by throwing a show-stopping performance.

The star performed two songs that ‘Che Che’, ‘Bobo’ featuring Davido, True featuring Kiss Daniel, ‘Red Handed’ featuring Peruzzi, Dremo and Yonda ending the show at exactly Midnight

“He said he will come buy us drinks but he’s not replying now.”

The star who is signed to Davido’s Worldwide music label also shared the stage with some of Uganda’s best acts like Irene Ntale who sang her heart out performing her smash hits like ‘Go Down’, ‘Gwe Aliko’, ‘Stamina Daddy’, ‘Omukwano Gwekiro’, as her loyal fans sung along and the band effortlessly in support.

The highlight of the night was man of the moment John Blaq whose control of the crowd left many in amazement with songs like Obubadi, Tukwatagane and Do Dat. Other stars included Lagum from Kenya and Oxlade.

Zahara Toto was the MC of the night.

“We have a long standing relationship with music as Johnnie Walker but this year is a little different because we are focusing on indigenous talent by promoting our local events,” said Roger Agamba, International Spirits Brand Manager at UBL.

Aside from the musical performances, the event also included cultural presentations with opportunities given to fashion vendors, food vendors and arts and craft stalls and cultural exhibitions and cool DJ mixes from the day’s spin masters DJ Simples and DJ Teyi.
