Uganda to the World: Priti Patel, a Ugandan Indian politician named British Home Secretary

The Netball World Cup in England where Uganda She Cranes raised the Ugandan flag high ended last week but our flag is still flying high in the Queen’s land. Uganda is still represented in England, not at the embassy, but in government.

This comes days after new British Prime Minister Borris Johnson appointed Priti Patel to the position of Home Secretary. The Home Secretary position in England and Wales is equivalent to the Minister of Internal Affairs in Uganda.

In case you are wondering how Patel relates to Uganda, Wonder no more. Patel was born to Gujarat Indian parents of Ugandan heritage. They immigrated to England in 1972 after the then president Idi Amin Dada expelled all Asians from Uganda.

Prior to her appointment, Patel has been active in British politics serving in different positions in her Conservative Party, and she is now representing Witham in UK parliament, a seat she has held since 2010.
