Dfcu admits they were hit by fraud in May, tight-lipped on the details

Following online media reports that Dfcu Bank was hit by fraud to the tune of Shs10 billion after hackers breached the bank’s system, the bank has admitted that indeed fraud took place in May.

“In May 2019, the Bank detected a case of fraud that was immediately reported to the police (CID HDQTRS GEF 604/2019) and investigations are ongoing,” a statement released by the bank this Monday evening reads.

However, the bank did not divulge details of the said fraud including individuals and figures involved.

The bank’s statement attempts to downplay the incident in a bid to restore customer confidence yet reports indicate customers’ money was stolen.

“Unfortunately, reports of this incident have been grossly and maliciously misrepresented in an attempt to damage the reputation of the Bank, destabilise the banking sector and the economy in general …. We urge the public to disregard the continued malicious publications and treat them with the contempt they deserve,” Dfcu’s post read in part.

The statement that was posted on Dfcu’s Facebook page drew public backlash, partly because the bank threatened legal action against media outlets that published the story yet they could not regard it as false.

“You are criticising actions of bloggers and threatening legal action yet you have not explained the fraud or justified fraudulent transactions that took place…. please explain…” one Sunny Lakhani commented on Dfcu’s post.

 “But already you Reported a case at CID HDQTRS GEF 604/2019. Fraud!” Bukenya Sulaiman commented implying that a true story cannot be malicious.

“There is no smoke without fire,” one Denis Ssemakula commented.
