‘Age limit’ triumph in court is for all Ugandans, they have ‘huge’ reason to celebrate –Deputy Attorney General Rukutana

Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana has said that yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling on the 2017 ‘Age Limit’ constitutional amendment was an early Easter gift to Ugandans, and every citizen should celebrate the court outcome.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court bench produced a 4:3 decision to uphold the earlier Constitutional Court ruling that ‘cleared’ the 2017 Constitutional amendment which scrapped lower and upper age limits for presidential candidates.

“I congratulate everyone for this triumph. This calls for every Ugandan to celebrate for democracy and rule of law have taken root in our country,” Rukutana said to the media earlier today.

And Rukutana hasn’t been alone in voicing like sentiments, but has been joined by several other government officials.

“Congrats to Parliament of Uganda over the 4:3 Supreme Court verdict. Our legislative efforts have been vindicated by the highest court of the land. Substance has worn over form. Let each political entity be free to field their best candidate without any limitations. The people are the limit,” Frank Tumwebaze, the minister for ICT said.

Government mouthpiece Ofwono Opondo on his part said: “On my own behalf and that of the Uganda Media Centre, we extend appreciation to the 317 NRM MPs, Parliament and the Petitioners for seeking to strengthen democracy in Uganda.”
