MP Zaake to be arraigned in Gulu and Arua courts, over last year’s Arua by-election chaos

Mityana Municipality Member of Parliament Francis Zaake, who was arrested by Police yesterday evening, is to be taken to court in Arua and Gulu to face charges over his involvement in the chaos that marred the conclusion of Arua Municipality by-election last year.

This has been revealed by the Director of Criminal Investigations, Ms Grace Akullo. Akullo says that Hon. Zaake is also going to face charges of jumping bail which was granted him on a police bond after being charged with treason, and that he also has a case of unlawful escape from police custody.

“We have arrested Zaake. He jumped police bond all this time. We are taking him to Arua Court,  then Gulu [court],” AIGP Akullo says.

However, Akullo hasn’t revealed when exactly the Mityana Municipality MP, who is presently detained at the Central Police Station, is going to be transported to Arua and Gulu, let alone be arraigned in court.

Zaake, Kyaddondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobo Wine, and 31 others were arrested on the eve of the bi-election in Arua last August, on allegations of stoning President Yoweri Museveni’s convoy as the by-election campaigns were concluded.

The suspects were tortured while in detention, and Kyagulanyi and Zaake were among those who came out with severe injuries, needing serious medical attention. Kyagulanyi and Zaake flew abroad for proper treatment.
