Over the weekend, the 2018 Annual African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA) was held in Dallas, Texas. The event saw heavy weights in the African music industry flock the venue with hopes of scooping the top accolades.
Unlike in the last edition where Uganda walked away with only one accolade that was brought by the Ghetto Triplets for ‘Best African Dance Group’, the Pearl of Africa this time made it better by taming two awards.
Eddy Kenzo scooped Best Male East Africa that was won by Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz last year. Kenzo’s triumph did not come at ease as he had to battle region musical giants like, Platnumz, Harmonize – Tanzania, Sauti Sol – Kenya, Khaligraph Jones – Kenya, Ali Kiba – Tanzania and Bebe Cool – Uganda.
“Team Eddy Kenzo thank you for the Hustle guys!!! We have again made 256 proud. We made it to AFRIMMA USA Best east 2018 AND FOR OUR BROTHER Ykee benda we are so proud of you congrats brother you made 256 Super proud. And big thanks to everyone.” Kenzo posted on his official social media platforms
Ykee Benda was another winner of the night as he walked away with the new comer award, he also posted in jubilation saying; “MPAKA RECORDS and my Team YKEEEMPIRE! Together we put in a lot of work this whole year….a lot of moves and I promised you God will come through for the Brand Ykee Benda….but I dint know he would do some of his magic this very year. I can’t stop crying while I thank him for not letting me down.”
Many more Ugandans were in contest for awards but failed to make it to the podium; Leila Kayondo, Rema, Sheebah Karungi and Juliana Kanyomozi for Best Female East Africa, Sasha Vybz for Video Director of the Year, Dr Fizzo and Eno Beats for Music Producer of The Year.
