Court Martial, Makindye has released Gen. Kale Kayihura on bail today morning, August 28.
Celebrations erupted in Court Martial after Lt. Gen. Gutti announced the decision of the court. His lawyers had submitted 11 counts for their client to be granted bail. Court Martial considered that he is a serving soldier and had never been convicted of any crime before. Also the Court Martial considered that he is of advanced age and needs urgent medical attention.
However, the bail conditions included that his movement is restricted to Kampala and Wakiso districts. Incase he needs to travel for treatment outside the country, he was ordered to seek permission from the army leadership and the Court Martial.
Kayihura faces three charges; failure to protect war weapons, kidnap of Rwandan refugees and illegal arming of Boda-boda 2010. If convicted, he will be sentenced to death.
Kayihura had been under detention at Makindye Barracks for about two months.
