For most Ugandans, President Museveni is a warmonger that has sometimes even without the authority of Parliament deployed the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in countries they have no business in.
But to the rest of the world, Museveni is a champion of peace that has kept the Great Lakes Region in balance for over 30 years.
At the 2018 Global Peace Leadership Conference (GPLC) held at the Commonwealth Resort, Munyonyo, Museveni was awarded for his peace efforts with the Global Peace Award.
The award is given to champions of peace, stability, and safety of human beings globally.
Museveni’s military presence in Somalia, South Sudan, Chad, DR Congo and Uganda’s open-door policy to refugees are considered by analysts to have been great contributing factors.
“I thank the organizers for giving me the Global Peace Award for Uganda’s role in stabilizing the Great Lakes Region. This recognition is for all Ugandans. I might lead the way, but Ugandans collectively have contributed to efforts of ensuring that we have a stable region,” Museveni said in his acceptance speech.
