The Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago has petitioned the Inspector General of Police to investigate death threats he has received.
In a letter attributed to his personal assistant, a one Elvis Kintu, Lukwago demands that his security is beefed up and the threats, from social media scrutinized.
“We can’t take these terrorization warnings for granted but rather contemplate them as stern warnings”, the letter that copied to the several top officials reads in part.
Lukwago’s plea comes at delicate time when high profile assasinations and murders are commonplace and in rare cases, warnings springing from social media platforms such as Facebook.
It is on record that a Facebook user by the names of Jane Kuli is on the police wanted list for her post that predicted – almost with precision – the assassination of former Arua Municipality Member of Parliament, Ibrahim Abiriga.
Earlier this week, President Yoweri Museveni ordered the Chief of Defence Forces to deploy UPDF to provide security to Parliamentarians after they complained that they feared for their lives and have been equally receiving death threats.
