After her hard-fought victory in the recently concluded Rukingiri by-election that saw political bigwigs from the NRM and FDC face-off in a tight campaign, Betty Muzanira has been sworn in today as the Woman Member of Parliament for Rukungiri District.
While presiding over the swearing-in, Speaker Rebecca Kadaga urged the legislator to work with character, dedication and to observe Parliament’s Rules of Procedure – a copy of which she furnished her among other instruments of power such as the Constitution.
Muzanira’s oath comes after she was declared victorious in a tightly contested race in which she beat her rival by 4282 votes. Having garnered 50,611, she beat National Resistance Movement’s Winfred Matsiko who got 46,329 votes while independent Prisca Mbaguta got 993 votes and People’s Progress Party’s Fabith Kukundakwe got 183.
The by-election came about after the Court of Appeal on March 22, 2018, nullified the victory of NRM Candidate Matsiko following reports of electoral malpractice, voter bribery and ballot stuffing.
