Located in the heart of the city, The Food Hub sits at Cargen House, the exact spot that housed famous eat out spot, Nandos restaurant. With such a great history, The Food Hub carries on the legacy that Cargen House has been known for. I visited The Food Hub on Wednesday evening, April 18, and oh my, it was an evening well spent.
Two wide doors flung open welcome you to The Food Hub. The first things you recognize are the various counters each with its unique colour, kitchen, and menu displayed over the counter.
On the far left is Mr. Goldens( Fried chicken), The rest is the same for other counters; Mighty burger, WandaCrust (pizza section), Roostas (Roasted Chicken) and Cream supreme (ice cream section) on the far right.
Neatly arranged seats cover the interior area. There are several sitting options ranging from two chairs facing each other, table of four, comfy wide couches and yes, ‘one-man-army’ seats for those who prefer to watch the city traffic!
The Food Hub adopts minimalist approach in its design with monochrome colour theme. Black and white dominates the seating space as well-arranged gigantic overhead lamps glow above the seating area. White -rounded pillars erect to the ceiling fitted with other lighting options. The pillars are fitted with sockets for those with laptops or smartphones with low batteries! The minimalism places the counters as the main areas of interest with more funky colours unique to the foods served.
THE MENU:
The Food Hub’s menu offers a wholesome for a fast food restaurant. For meat lovers, there are burgers and fried chicken setting a conflict of interest. There is pizza option and range of ice cream for those with sweet tooth. On the day I visited, I settled for a chicken wrap served with chips and soda at 18,000.
The wrap came in very generous size. Each bite revealed the tenderness of breaded chicken piece infused with essence of delicate mayonnaise seasoning combined with fresh tomato slices and lettuce.
The well glazed chips with a floss of ketchup added to the satiety value that was crowned by bottle of Fanta that washed down a great evening!
Other items at this counter include one piece chicken at Shs8000 which comes with regular chips and soda. Two piece chicken at Shs12,500. At the Ice Cream counter, there are options at as low as Shs 3000 with Strawberry and Cream Cookies go for Shs 2500, Hot dogs range from Shs 5000 to Shs 10,000 depending on size. Pizza ranges from Shs 17,000 depending on size and toppings. You will be spoilt for choice!
THE AMBIENCE: Spacious, child friendly especially with kid’s options on the menu. Chairs arranged facing each other. This perhaps encourages conversation.
THE CROWD: There were couples, school kids, campusers, families and corporates.
CUSTOMER CARE: The waiters were keen to clean tables after one left their table. However, when one takes a seat at the restaurant, I wish the waiters would inform them (especially first time visitor) that they should place their order at the counter because one might wait for menu book.
