Our youth must learn to abstain from sexual behaviors — says Health Minister, downplays scarcity of condoms

Opendi addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Centre

Following a revelation from local health coordinators that there will be
a scarcity of condoms as Ugandans approach the festive season, MPs led by Mbale Municipality’s Wamai Wamanga tasked the State Minister of Health for General Duties, Sarah Achieng Opendi to explain whether the country has enough condoms in stock.

According to Opendi, the ministry has adequate supplies of condoms but they are holding them for one reason; to teach the youth abstinence.

“We have adequate supplies of condoms but we don’t want the youths to do is to simply pick condoms and engage in reckless sexual behaviours,” Opendi stated.

Condom shortage has been reported in the districts of  Masaka, Rakai, Kyotera, Ssembabule, Lyantonde, Lwengo, Kalungu, Bukomansimbi, Kalangala, Mpigi, Gomba and Butambala.
