If anyone had any doubts about Saturday’s Johnnie Walker Soul Safari concert, they can put them to rest now after Ginuwine, the headline act of the show, jetted in on Thursday night.
Real names Elgin Baylor Lumpkin, Ginuwine was one of R&B’s foremost stars during the 90s heyday of R&B and soul and he’s expected to spread more love when he gets his turn on stage come Saturday, at Speke Resort Munyonyo Lakeside.
“I’m happy to be here and looking forward to the show. I expect a good time here,” he told media on arrival at Entebbe Airport, flanked by his entourage and Jazz Safari founder Tshaka Mayanja.
Tickets have been on sale since late October with excitement among fans at fever pitch. The American star’s smooth singing earned him a large following and made him a regular presence on the R&B charts, selling millions of albums all over the world.
The 48-year-old became a household name with tracks like Differences, Pony, Same Ol’ G, In Those Jeans among others. Meanwhile local acts, Kenneth Mugabi, Naava Grey, Aziz Azion and Tonya Ahenda will be opening for the R&B legend. “This will definitely be a big opportunity for them to showcase their talent,” said Tshaka.
Tickets are still on sale at Shell Lugogo Bypass, Shell Bugolobi, Shell Kira Road (Bukoto), House of Walker, Sheraton Hotel, Definition Acacia Mall and online via Quicket.co.ug. Stanbic Bank rolled out a big offer of buying a ticket for only 120K and get one free if Visa or Mastercard (from any bank) is used. “This is like purchasing two tickets for a price of one,” said Tshaka.
