Goalkeeper Denis Onyango and Uganda Cranes have scooped nominations in this year’s CAF Awards.

Mr. Safe Hands, Onyango will be in the running for the African player of the year against 33 other players that include; Alex Iwobi (Nigeria & Arsenal), Wilfried Zaha (Cote d’Ivoire & Crystal Palace), Pierre Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon & Arsenal), Riyad Mahrez (Algeria & Manchester City), Sadio Mane (Senegal & Liverpool), Mehdi Benatia (Morocco & Juventus) and Mohamed Salah (Egypt & Liverpool), among others.

Denis Onyango is indeed having a great chance at upsetting the big names in Europe. With five clean sheets to his name in Cranes, Afcon qualification campaign and impressive performances at Mamelodi Sundowns, our fingers are crossed!

Uganda Cranes’ commanding back-to-back qualification to Afcon, has earned the team ‘African Team of the year’ nomination,  a gong it scooped last year. Cranes will be in race with Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritania and Zimbabwe.

The winners for the African Player of the Year and Women’s Player of the Year will be decided by CAF Technical & Development Committee, media experts, legends, coaches of the quarter-finalists of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup and coaches and captains of the national teams of the 54 Member Associations.

Other categories like’ Youth Player of the Year’, ‘Men’s Coach of the Year’, ‘Women’s Coach of the Year,’ ‘Men’s National Team of the Year’ and ‘Women’s National Team of the Year’ will be elected by: CAF Technical & Development Committee, media experts, legends, coaches of the quarter-finalists of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

The Awards Gala will be held on Tuesday, January 8 2019 in Dakar, Senegal.
