Lake Victoria victims just committed suicide — Tamale Mirundi

With the country grieving together with families that lost their loved ones in the Lake Victoria tragedy, current affairs analyst Tamale Mirundi has blamed people’s negligence as the cause of the saddening incident.

According to Tamale, it was not wise for any vigilant individual to board a boat that was said to have been faulty.

“This was a total risk of lives, how can a boat said to be carrying rich people fail to comply with the water rules and regulations? The victims just committed suicide,” Tamale said.

The motormouth analyst also wrapped Henry Ategeka, the principal marine officer in the Ministry of Works and Transport who had earlier been quoted as saying that, the boat in question was on the wanted list but had not been inspected yet.

“We have been looking for it. We wanted to inspect it. Unfortunately, the accident happened before we could inspect it.”

Tamale said this is a case to insensitive civil servants who have continued to neglect their duties. He also questioned security officials for not standing their feet in refusing such huge numbers from using a faulty boat.

Following yesterday’s failed attempt to pull the boat wreckage out of the Lake, today Uganda Police Construction Unit has brought its heavy machinery to help crane the wrecked boat out. This will also help establish if there are more bodies trapped within it.

According to the latest statement issued by police, 32 people are confirmed dead and the rescued individuals still stand at 27.
