No deaths in Karuma Dam accident, ‘several’ injured — Government

Government has denied claims that three lives were lost in an accident in an underground access duct of Karuma Hydropower Dam which is under construction.

According to reports, on the evening of Thursday August 30, a worker carrier truck transporting workers for the evening shift into one of the tunnels at the Karuma Hydro Power project, failed to break ramming into the side wall and eventually overturned.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development states that they were ‘several injuries’ and no deaths.

“Several workers were injured. All the injured were immediately evacuated and taken to Lacor and Gulu Independent Hospital for medical attention. No fatalities have been recorded. We are verifying the identity of the injured with available official records and Traffic Police conducting investigations into the likely cause of the accident. We shall issue a more comprehensive report on the identities shortly”, Mr Simon Kasyate, the spokesman of Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited said.

He termed the report of a collapsed tunnel and deaths as ‘fake news’.
