Voting kicks off in Arua with low turnout, high security presence. Kassiano Wadri still detained

Voting has kicked off in Arua Municipality as residents move to replace slain MP Ibrahim Abiriga.

According to our sources on the ground, the town is relatively peaceful at all the 65 polling stations in the Municipality with a total of over 46,000 registered voters but by 9 am, very few people have turned up to vote.

Over 12 candidates are in the race but the tightest will be between NRM’s candidate Nusura Tiperu, FDC strongman who lost to Abiriga in February 2016,  Bruce Musema and Independent Candidate who represent Terego County in the 9th Parliament, Kassiano Wadri.

Wadri is however still in police custody by press time and could miss the election. He is accused of planning an attack on the presidential convoy together with Kyadondo East MP, Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) and others.

Voting is slated to end at 4 pm and votes tallying will start thereafter.
