Black Pirates this weekend tackle Hima Cement Heathens in the final of the 2017 Uganda Cup at Kyadondo Rugby Club in a repeat of the 2016 final where Heathens won Pirates 20-17 in what was a hotly-contested game. Unlike last year where Heathens went into the game wearing the favourites tag, the game coming up on Saturday November 4 will feature two sides that are almost impossible to separate in terms of their prospects of walking away victorious on D-day. Pirates, who dumped Kobs 25-23 at the semi-final stage will be fighting to tame Heathens and claim their second title having last won the Uganda Cup back in 2007.
The Heathens struggled to beat Toyota Buffaloes in a semi-final which was easily the most boring game of the competition, eventually ending 3-0 courtesy of a penalty converted by Chris Lubanga in the first half. However, Heathens will be motivated by the prospect of a fifth straight title and twelfth in total if they can triumph against Pirates this weekend. If Heathens can do it, they will get even closer to matching their own run when they won six straight titles between 1999 and 2004.
With so much history at stake, there won’t be a better time for Pirates to exact revenge by stopping Heathen’s dominance. Before the final kicks off, Kobs and Buffaloes will entertain the fans in the third place playoff fixture.
