The scenes at the court Stella Nyanzi’s bail hearing were emotional. Not only was she rushed for emergency treatment before the court session but also she could not walk on her own. She was brought to the court at 11am about two hours later after the expected time for the proceeding. After the ruling, it was her lawyer and colleague who came in handy to help her.
During the court session, unlike in previous proceedings, she failed to stand on her feet. She sat down throughout the session. The presiding magistrate at one point asked whether she was listening. Her faint response was affirmative. Before the proceeding was briefly adjourned, she appeared to have fainted. Prison officers attended to her.
After she was granted bail, with the support of her lawyer Nicholas Opiyo and a colleague, they carried her to a car. Nyanzi had been on remand since April 10 after she was arrested over offensive communication and cyber harassment after referring to President Museveni as a pair of buttocks in a Facebook post. She is expected in court on May 25.
