When it’s war time, vultures are the happiest creatures. Similarly as Nakivubo Park Yard market was demolished scrap sellers, came out in numbers to salvage the little they could get in a case of one man’s eat is another man’s poison.
While tractors were clearing up the place, scrap business boys made off carrying sacks of scrap and others turning the debris upside down to collect all sorts of aluminum and other metals that had remained.
The eviction of the vendors from the market followed a Sunday meeting between market leaders, minister for Kampala Betty Kamya and tycoon Ham who bought off the market area.
Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago yesterday tried to reach the market in a bid to stop KCCA’s attempt to evict vendors but in vain. However, he warned minister Kamya not to use her ministerial powers to frustrate the lives of Kampala people.
While addressing the media this morning, the Chairperson Park Yard Market Kassim Ssebadduka explained that, Park Yard Market vendors have been offered 1,000 stalls space both in Usafi market and on top Ham’s building where they will operate without pay for the first five months.
