Byanyima rejects police summons over tribal comments

Edith Byanyima aunt to the Kanyamunyu brothers rejected police summons over her comments in an interview with a local tabloid where she allegedly accused “Acholi soldiers” of being behind the death of Mathew and  Joseph Kanyamunyu’s father.

Byanyima was today expected to appear at the police’s Special Investigation Division in Kireka over allegations of promoting sectarianism and incitement of violence after she allegedly pointed fingers at Acholi soldiers.

As the law states, any person who makes any statement which in one way or the other is likely to promote feelings of ill or hostility among or against any group of persons on accounts of religion or may be tribe, an offence is  accountable and that person is due to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years.




Byanyima had been summoned through a letter addressed to her from the acting deputy director special Investigations Division, Henry Mugumya calling her to report to police today morning.

After Byanyima accused the late Akena’s family of being in the know about Kanyamunyu’s Father death, Akena’s family paraded a team of lawyers who wrote to the Inspector General of Police demanding for investigation of Byanyima’s comments.

Kenneth Akena was allegedly shot to death by Mathew and Joseph Kanyamyu and Cynthia Munwangari after he scratched their car. The trio is up to now detained at Luzira prison.

Edith Byanyima is a sister to Winnie Byanyima a wife to the prominent opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye.
