If you were prophesying doom for Rubaga South MP Hon. Kato Lubwama, you might die in your movie! The embattled MP who has been dragged to court over his academic qualification by one Habib Buwembo a member of the infamous “jobless brother hood”,could have the final laugh after Makerere university has come out to support his qualifications.
In a statement issued by the academic registrar, Makerere University, Mr. Alfred Masikye the Rubaga South MP fulfilled all requirements for the Diploma in music, dance and drama programme in 1992 and was consequently admitted and was awarded the diploma in 1995 after he successfully completed.
In the case, Buwembo contends that Kato Lubwama lacks the minimum academic qualifications to be a member of parliament and that he failed his Uganda Certificate of Education examinations.
Mr Buwembo further contends that according to the document signed by the then Uganda National Examination Board Executive Secretary, Peter H Anywar, he clarifies that having obtained result 7, Kato Lubwama did not qualify for the award of a certificate.
However, in the document, Makerere university academic registrar stated that by 1992, in addition to the normal entry routes through direct, “O”-level or mature entry, the course was also extended people who were already committed to performing arts or had due skills and experience and could pass the entry examinations set by the music, dance and drama department acting on a 1978 recommendation before the course was opened to all in 2008.
“Mr. Kato Lubwama sat and passed the university special entrance examinations as a bonafide candidate, having fulfilled all the requirements for that programme in 1992. He was consequently admitted to pursue a diploma in music, dance and drama which he successfully completed in 1995 and was awarded a diploma in music, dance and drama on January 20 1995”, he concluded the statement.
Sounds like a sigh of relief? Too early to tell as the case is before court.
