Threats of sacking doctors will not work — Uganda Medical Association fires back

Dr. Ekwaro Obuku, president of the Uganda Medical Association says threats will not work until their demands are met. He was responding to the president Museveni’s comments stating that the government will recruit other doctors willing to work under the current salary structure.

“The president’s concern shows how important a doctor is in this social economic transformation. Those threats are unfortunate and they will not work. Doctors have had broken promises and they don’t trust the salary review committee. The doctor is unique in the service sector. At night, day, weekends, on call,” Obuku stated.

“As doctors, for a long time, we have been laid back and now adopting to the politics of the day. Doctors have been patient. They had to rise up for themselves and the nation. We need to increase the budget and achieve target set in the SDGs,”he added.

However, Dr. Obuku revealed that as they hope to meet president Museveni today at state house. He also promised  that doctors will maintain emergency care.
