Interview: Maro breaking anti Basoga stereotypes

Matooke Republic caught up with self-proclaimed Rnb kyabazinga Maro ahead of his Nzira Nago concert on this Saturday in Jinja.

Tell us about your concert ….
The Nzira Nago concert shall be going down at Dam Waters rugby grounds in Jinja this Saturday. It’s going to be a game changer. We shall be celebrating life, music and culture. This is going to be more of a fest than a concert. I am going to have Lady Mariam of the Tindatine fame, Frasha of the P Unit, Naiboi also from Kenya and Joanita Zackfrom Denmark among other surprise acts. ” Maro ahead of major concert.

I’m told you had a concert in Jinja last year as well. So with all the Rnb kyabazinga fuss, the whole Lusoga lyrical content and all that, don’t you think it’s too much Busoga for your fan base already?
Well, I am an ambassador for Busoga. I am promoting our culture. If I do not, then who else will? Besides, people actually appreciate what I do. I am in for breaking stereotypes.

What makes you believe Nzira Nago is going to be a game changer?
This is a getaway from the Kampala fracas. It is not every day that you see something like this, do you? More still, I shall be delivering all my hits, one after the other.

Talking of hits, many critics have written off your career as one that couldn’t go past Mubbi Bubbi.
Well, I cannot deny, MubbiBubbiput me on the map more than any other song but well, even after it, I had good music going on. If those critics were indeed critics, why don’t they critic my other works and tell me what they think about them. Critics are merely naysayers.

And drifting away from the music, a tabloid recently came out and said that you are a boring person, are you?
Good you said tabloid. To answer your question, once a person elevates the bar on the Ugandan music scene beyond controversy, sagas and cheap scandal, you become boring. I cannot stoop low just to get attention in insignificancies.

Well, what is your parting shot ahead of your concert?
I call upon everybody who supports Maro to come through. It is about time we all reciprocated love towards one another.
