Sheikh Kamoga, three others handed life sentences over terrorism

Sheikh Kamoga will spend the rest of life behind bars.

Renowned Muslim cleric Sheikh Muhammad Yunus Kamoga and three others have been sentenced to life imprisonment over terrorism.

The three others are Siraji Kawoya, Murta Mudde Bukenya and Fahad Kalungi.

Two other co-accused; Yusuf Kakande and Abdusalam Sekayanja were handed 30 year jail sentences. The six were found guilty by the three justices of the International Crimes Division of High Court, Ezekiel Muhanguzi, Percy Tuhaise and Jane Kiggundi on Monday afternoon.

The clerics and eight others were arrested over the alleged murder of Mustafa Bahiga, the former Kampala District Amir and Hassan Ibrahim Kirya, the former spokersperson Kibuli based Muslim faction and the attempted murder of Dr. Harouna Jjemba, the leader of a rival tabliq faction.

Court found them not guilty of murder and attempted murder charges saying prosecution had failed to convince court of their involvement in the crime, but they were found guilty of terrorism.

The six are said to have issued death threats by printing and distributed fliers with the names of those listed for murder, in numerous mosques on top of sending threatening messages.
