Former tourism minister Mutagamba passes away

Former tourism minister Maria Mutagamba has passed away at Case Clinic in Kampala. She was 64 years old.



Mutagamba served in various capacities in cabinet from the year 2000 and she retired from politics in June 2016.

Her appointment to cabinet was a shocker as she had been serving as a Deputy Secretary General of the Democratic Party. 

Born in Rakai on September 5, 1964, she studied at St. Aloysius Senior Secondary School in Bwanda, Kalungu District for her O-Level studies (1967-1970).

She joined the eliteMount Saint Mary’s College Namagunga in Mukono District for her A-level from (1971-1972), before moving to Makerere University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1976. 

She first worked as a banking officer at Bank of Uganda before getting actively involved in politics as a DP sympathiser. Between 1994 and 1995, she was one of the Constituent Assembly delegates that drafted Uganda’s constitution.

Mutagamba’s husband, Tarsis Matthew Mutagamba, died at the age of 70 due to heart failure on 2 January 2004.
