Kyadondo East election heats up as Besigye joins Kantinti’s campaign trail

Singer Bobi Wine has been having a fairy tale campaign in the Kyadondo East Member of Parliament by-elections, but it looks like incumbent Apollo Kantinti is gaining traction after his party’s Forum For Democratic Change’s leadership threw their weight behind him on Sunday.

FDC stalwart Kiiza Besigye who happens to be an area resident joined Kantinti on his campaign trail alongside party Chairman Mugisha Muntu and Nandala Mafabi, another FDC heavyweight.

Bobi Wine had passed off as Besigye’s preferred candidate because of his association with the four time presidential aspirant.

A few days before nomination, FDC had in fact called a meeting asking Bobi Wine to step down in favour of Kantinti so that the opposition could retain the seat, but Bobi insisted Kantinti should stand down for him, weighing in that he was the stronger candidate.

In an interview earlier last week, the public perceived that Besigye had in fact endorsed Bobi Wine when he said the area people should choose the best candidate to represent them. However, in the same interview, he said he belongs to FDC and would vote the FDC candidate.

And to avoid being misunderstanding by the public as rumours were making rounds that he had endorsed Bobi Wine, Besigye has hit the campaign trail with Kantinti.

With the current developments, the opposition’s vote is now sharply divided. This is what ruling party NRM candidate Sitenda Sebalu has been hoping to secure a chance to return to Parliament.
