WCW: Gertrude Tumusiime Uwitware, the gentle lioness

Is it just me or are the Ugandan lionesses piling up? I’m of the thought that Ugandan women have had just about enough of it. One of these lionesses is Gertrude Tumusiime Uwitware and today we’re crushing on her.

Her business is to report touching and often times tear jerking stories no one else would otherwise know or care about. But on Saturday, NTV’s Gertrude Uwitware was the subject of the news after she was kidnapped and spent 11 agonising hours in captivity,  before she was dumped somewhere around Kira division.

For reasons yet to be known but basing on her earlier revelations of being threatened, Uwitware could have been kidnapped because of her support for social media activist Stella Nyanzi who is currently on remand in Luzira Prison on charges of offensive communication. Or who am I kidding; Nyanzi is in prison for allegedly calling President Museveni “a pair of buttocks!”

Anyway, just like the many known and unknown Ugandan iron ladies, Uwitware treated her kidnapping like she would a hiccup. She was back at her desk the next morning doing what she loves to do most- nosing around for unusual stories.

The soft spoken Uwitware learnt her story-telling craft at Nation Media Lab in Nairobi. As a little girl, Uwitware received her first calling as the voice of the voiceless from former UTV’s news anchor- Beatrice Akello. Uwitware says the slow and articulate manner in which Akello used to read the news sent shivers down her spine (Bless you Beatrice Akello).

Sorry guys, your crush should only stop at how she carries out her duties because she is in a stable relationship and she is a mother of one.

We’re glad to find such a fine journalist in you Gertrude Uwitware. You’re our crush this Wednesday.
