Stella Nyanzi to undergo mental examination, but still faces two weeks temporary detention at Luzira Prison referral hospital

State Attorney Jonathan Muwaganya has requested the Buganda Road court to remand controversial social media activist and Makerere don Stella Nyanzi to Luzira Prison referral hospital. The state wants Nyanzi to be detained at the hospital for 14 days so that doctors can carry out a mental medical examination on her.

“Dr. Stella Nyanzi has a direct impact on the moral decadence of this country. She has a history of psychiatric disorder and she has been a patient at Butabika Hospital before,” Muwaganya told court.

Nyanzi’s lawyer Nicholas Opiyo however expressed his discomfort with the way the state has mishandled his client’s case. “The state application was brought in bad faith and with an act of ambush to deny appropriate response.”  Opiyo then asked court to adjourn the hearing.

All this happened this afternoon when Nyanzi appeared before the Buganda Road Magistrate’s court to answer charges of cyber harassment and offensive communication.

According to police, Nyanzi on January 28 this year used her Facebook page “Stella Nyanzi” to make a suggestion or proposal referring to President Yoweri Museveni as among other things “a pair of buttocks, “which suggestion/proposal is obscene or indecent.”
