Newly-appointed police spokesperson, afande Asan Kasingye, said police will provide bulletproof vests to all bodyguards and drivers of senior officers so that they can be in position to engage armed attackers.

Kasingye, the former Interpol boss who replaced fallen Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Andrew Felix Kaweesi said the police authorities will also provide body armour and escort motorcycles to personnel working with its senior officials.

“We have already discussed that issue and it comes with our mandate to protect citizens and their property. We cannot protect others when we cannot provide for our own officers,” Kasingye said adding that they will also step up surveillance systems at homes of senior officials as well as the police stations and barracks.

According to Monitor Newspaper, Kasingye said Crime Intelligence and Criminal Investigations Department have been tasked to investigate all the current and previous security threats that targeted senior officers.

This comes after the brutal murder of the AIGP Kaweesi alongside his driver and body guard last week. Over a dozen suspects in connection with the murders have been held at the high-security detention centre at Nalufenya Police Station in Jinja District.
