Barbie Kyagulanyi: When your baby won’t stop crying

Babies can be complicated creatures. It may be really hard for one to understand why they are gloomy, irritable and inconsolable when they cry. We got home late the other day and as soon as our baby heard the dad’s voice in the living room, she started crying really hard. Panicking to her room, he realised she had stood in her bed while wailing.

The rest are on holiday so I carried out a mini research on how the day went and of all the stories they told me was one of a bike accident which got my other daughter crying from the pain all afternoon. The prolonged crying got the little one crying as well, maybe as a form of expressing sympathy for the older one who had got injuries.

Children whose parents don’t stay home all day may cry in the night and because you did not spend the whole day with them, you may want to check what exactly happened in your absence. Some of us panic and even when we discover that the temperature is normal and there’s no fever whatsoever, we continue to imagine and worry.

The baby’s reasons for crying may not be far from your reach. Sometimes we have to interrogate the people they spend the day with. Find out what kind of food they ate. It could be a stomach upset and the baby is constipated. Your baby may be having a running stomach. It could be an accident they had earlier and your baby could now be crying because of the pain they sustained from injuries.

Could it be that your baby spends the day with people who she/he doesn’t like? Could it be your baby is being mishandled? Is someone barking at or even caning her/ him? Undress your child to find out if they have any wounds. Check for diaper rash or heat rash. When they cry, check the mouth for any wounds which could have been caused by hot liquids or foods. Babies could as well cry because they want to be carried by the one person they are accustomed to.

If your baby has been sleeping next to you and you have introduced them to their own bed, they may not take well to sleeping alone. Many babies reject cups when the bottle is ditched and in protest, they refuse to feed and instead cry. Even when hungry, babies will simply cry.

There are reasons why they cry over and over again. Don’t give up on trying to find out the cause of their pain. Until your child can casually talk and tell you why they are crying, you must guess and exhaust all possible reasons for their crying. Until then, grow a thick skin, be patient and control your anger when your baby cries non-stop from reasons you can’t easily tell.
