Earlier this week, veteran journalist Joachim Buwembo visited Afande Stella Nabunya, Commandant of Luzira Women’s Prisons in Luzira. The story goes that as the humorous and satirical Joachim made his way to meet the Prisons officer, “inmates in uniform made noises just like those of a boarding school.”
According to Joachim, he had managed to ignore all the noise, but a ‘tallish, youngish female insisted on greeting him with a sophisticated ‘hi’ and smile.’
“I had ignored but she repeated the greeting so I stopped and looked at her. I had seen the face somewhere!”
The old man’s mind raced from all corners he has worked over the years; a former student? A journalist? Well, since he couldn’t fix a name to the face, Joachim simply smiled back and walked on.
Then it dawned on him: Cynthia Munangwari! Cynthia is one of the suspects in the murder of Kenneth Akena which happened last month. The seasoned journalist said he retraced his steps to talk to her properly, but a warder blocked him.
One detail that couldn’t escape Joachim though was that Cynthia was still smiling. “Cynthia still smiling with a mixture of vulnerability and hope in her eyes,” Joachim revealed. We also learnt that Cynthia greets almost every visitor that walks by.
