Uganda was in the spotlight at a major film festival when the Queen of Katwe movie had its world premiere at the annual Toronto International Film Festival.
Unlike most African stories that are about despair and hopelessness, Queen of Katwe is the colourful true story of Phiona Mutesi (played by Madina Nalwanga) a young girl selling maize on the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion.
