In a bid to reduce the number of accidents on Kampala –Masaka Road, Police last week arrested a total of 136 drivers.

While addressing journalists during the weekly press briefing at Police headquarters in Naguru this morning, the force’s Deputy Spokesperson Polly Namaye said 64 drivers had been arraigned before court while 72 others are expected in court today.

Namaye said drivers had been arrested for driving with no or expired permits, drunk driving, careless driving, dangerous loading, diving without a badge (for bus drivers), having no third party insurance, failing to stop, driving numberless cars and those driving vehicles under dangerous mechanical conditions (DMCs).

More than 200 people have perished in accidents on Masaka Road this year, leading to social media users renaming it “Massacre Road.”

This week, traffic police is expected to carry our operations in Kampala and drivers are encouraged to be in possession of photocopies of their driving permits to avoid arrest.

Unlike the usual traffic offences where motorists are issued a fine, this time they will be arrested and arraigned before court, which could pass a jail sentence and a fine or both.
